Wastewater collection operator exam
The most recall-heavy of the wastewater exams: what the collection license covers, its duty weights, and where to study.
The wastewater collection exam covers gravity sewers, manholes, lift stations, inflow and infiltration, cleaning and CCTV, and confined-space and hydrogen sulfide hazards, offered Class I through IV. At Class I, equipment, collection system work, and lift stations make up about two thirds of 100 questions, roughly 80 percent recall. Higher classes shift toward planning and diagnosis. Safety questions are graded against the rulebook, and collection-system math trips up points. Study the 2025 WPI criteria only, not older editions.
The exam behind the wastewater collection license
Before sewage reaches the plant it travels miles of pipe, and keeping that system flowing is its own license: gravity sewers and manholes, lift stations, inflow and infiltration, cleaning and CCTV, and the hydrogen sulfide and confined spaces that make the work dangerous. It is offered Class I through IV on the standardized exam.
What the Class I exam weights
The wastewater collection criteria, published by Water Professionals International for 2025, put the Class I exam near this split, across 100 scored questions:
- operating, evaluating, and maintaining equipment, around 27 percent
- collection system operation, maintenance, and restoration, around 27 percent
- lift stations, around 18 percent
- monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment, around 14 percent
- security, safety, and administration, around 14 percent
This is the most recall-heavy exam of the set, roughly 80 percent recall to 20 percent application at Class I, with about one calculation question in ten. Equipment, the collection system itself, and lift stations are two thirds of it.
What the higher classes add
Lower down, the exam wants you to know the parts and the routine: how to clean a line, what a lift station panel is telling you, why a manhole needs ventilating before anyone goes in. Higher up it wants the program: planning an inflow and infiltration reduction, sizing a lift station response, getting ahead of the sulfide corrosion that eats a system from the crown down. The same work, asked as planning and diagnosis.
Eligibility for each class is the state's, built on experience and education and usually one step at a time, and it lives on your state page rather than in the exam.
Where operators lose points
Safety is tested hard here, and it is graded against the rulebook rather than against how a crew runs a job in the field, so the confined-space and gas questions deserve a deliberate read. The collection-system math, slopes and velocities and wet-well volumes, is the other place points slip.
