Confined space entry and trenching
The gas readings, ventilation steps, and trench depth rules that keep collections work from turning deadly.
Manholes, wet wells, and pump stations are confined spaces where hydrogen sulfide (H2S) kills collection workers. H2S is heavier than air, pools at the bottom, and numbs your sense of smell, so no odor does not mean no gas. A three-gas meter checks oxygen, methane, and H2S before entry, read at the bottom, not the opening. CCTV and lamping inspect sewers without entry at all. A trench five feet deep or more needs a safety system; four feet or more needs a ladder within twenty-five feet of every worker.

Why the exam tests this
Security, Safety and Administration carries 14 percent of the Class I exam. It does not test light.
The exam writers treat this ground the way the field does. Getting it wrong later does not cost you points. It costs a life now.
Day-to-day work at one plant can breed comfort. You enter the same wet well every week and nothing has gone wrong. The gas check starts to feel like a formality.
The exam does not know your plant's history. It asks you to apply the rule every time, not just when something feels off. That gap between habit and procedure is what these questions probe.
What you need to know
Manholes, wet wells, and pump stations are confined spaces in a collection system. The gas that has killed the most collection workers inside them is hydrogen sulfide, H2S. Its toxicity ranks with hydrogen cyanide. At a high enough concentration, a worker can lose consciousness suddenly and die without a fast rescue.
Two properties make it worse than a simple poison. It is heavier than air, so it settles in the lowest part of a manhole or wet well. That is right where a worker climbs down. It also deadens your sense of smell quickly, so a fading rotten-egg odor is not good news.
Never let your nose decide a space is safe.
Before anyone goes down, ventilate the space. Then take a reading with a three-gas meter, one instrument that checks oxygen, methane, and H2S at once. Each reading guards against a different failure. Low oxygen suffocates, methane is explosive, and H2S is the toxic gas.
Take the reading at the bottom of the space, where H2S actually settles, not just at the opening. Keep the meter calibrated. An uncalibrated meter can hand you a false safe reading.
The best way to manage a confined-space entry is to avoid making one. Lamping lowers a still camera into a manhole. CCTV runs a self-propelled camera through the line. Both let you inspect a sewer without a person going inside.
CCTV has become the workhorse tool partly for that reason. When entry is genuinely the only option, treat a pump station with the same three-gas discipline as a manhole. Pump stations are confined spaces too, not just process equipment.
At higher grades, expect the exam to test that trade-off directly.
Trenching runs on its own numbers, and they come from OSHA. A trench five feet deep or more needs a trench safety system before anyone works in it. That means shoring, sloping, or a trench box.
A trench four feet deep or more needs a ladder for exit. One ladder rarely covers a long run, so additional ladders go in every twenty-five feet. Space them so no one has to walk further than that to reach one. Each ladder has to reach at least three feet above the surrounding ground.
That is high enough to grab from inside the trench.
Buried utilities are the other trap in a trench. An emergency does not suspend the rule. If a repair has to start before the lines are located, hand-excavate until you find them. Heavy equipment can only start digging once the lines are marked, or after a maximum two-hour wait, whichever comes first.
The ladder and trench-safety-system triggers sit at different depths, so a six-foot trench needs both at once.
A collection agency's own new-hire training checklist backs this up. Confined space training and certification, and OSHA trench-shoring setup, are standard items before an operator works unsupervised. That is the same bar the exam holds you to.
Worked examples
Trench depth, both triggers at once. You are opening a trench to repair a lateral, and the excavation will run six feet deep. What has to be in place before anyone works in it? Six feet clears the five-foot mark, so a trench safety system is required: shoring, sloping, or a trench box.
Six feet also clears the four-foot mark, so a ladder is required too. Place it so nobody travels more than twenty-five feet to reach one. Let it reach at least three feet above the surrounding grade. The answer is both requirements, because one depth cleared both triggers.
Gas reading location. Before entering a wet well, a crew member takes a reading at the top of the manhole. The result reads clean. Is the space cleared for entry? It is not.
H2S is heavier than air and pools at the bottom. A reading taken at the opening can miss the danger entirely. Ventilate first, then meter at the bottom of the space. Never substitute smell for a reading, since H2S deadens the sense of smell as concentration rises.
Buried utility wait time. A gravity-main blockage needs emergency excavation, and the utility locate service has not yet marked the lines. How long can the crew wait before heavy equipment starts digging? Hand-excavate until the lines are located. If they are still unmarked, the maximum wait before heavy equipment can begin is two hours.

Common traps
- Trusting your nose. H2S deadens your sense of smell, so no odor does not mean no gas; it can mean the opposite.
- Reading gas only at the manhole opening. H2S is heavier than air and pools at the bottom, so a reading taken up top can miss the real danger.
- Skipping meter calibration. An uncalibrated meter can hand you a false safe reading right before someone climbs down.
- Mixing up the two trench depth numbers. The ladder rule starts at four feet; the trench safety system rule starts at five feet. A six-foot trench needs both, not just one.
- Treating CCTV or lamping as a nice-to-have. Running a camera instead of a person is the actual point of the tool, not an extra step.
- Starting heavy equipment near unmarked lines before the two-hour wait is up, or before the lines are actually located, whichever comes first.
