The short answer

Water treatment exam math runs from shared basics to advanced process calculations. Every grade covers unit conversions, tank volume, detention time, and chlorine dose using pounds per day equals mg/L times MGD times 8.34. Higher classes add sedimentation and filtration loading, CT for disinfection, percent removal, well and pump calculations, and multi-step optimization problems. Class III is the hinge, adding CT, filtration loading, backwash, and horsepower. Most points are lost by mixing units like MGD with gallons per minute, or using detention time instead of contact time on CT problems.

The calculations on the water treatment exam

Water treatment math runs from the basics every operator shares up through the process calculations that separate a Class IV operator from a Class I. What you calculate

The core, on every grade: convert flow and units, find a tank volume, work detention time, and run a chlorine dose with the pounds formula, which is pounds per day equals concentration in mg/L times flow in MGD times 8.34. From there the treatment-specific math stacks up:

  • dosage and chemical feed, including the jump from pounds of chlorine to gallons or pounds of a product at a given strength
  • sedimentation loading: surface overflow rate and weir overflow rate
  • filtration: filtration rate in gallons per minute per square foot, backwash rate, rate of rise, and unit filter run volume
  • CT for disinfection: the residual times the contact time, then the inactivation ratio against the required CT
  • percent removal across a process
  • wells and pressure: drawdown, specific capacity, and the pressure to head conversion at 2.31 feet per psi
  • pumping: water, brake, and motor horsepower, and the energy cost behind them

What deepens from Class I to IV

Entry grades want the conversions, a volume, detention time, and a simple dose. The working grade adds sedimentation loading and the first lab titrations. Class III is the hinge: CT in earnest, filtration loading and backwash, blending and chemical purity, and the horsepower chain. Class IV is mostly multi-step optimization, wire-to-water efficiency, and combined problems where one answer feeds the next.

A couple worked the exam's way

A sand filter is 12 feet by 10 feet and treats 800 gallons per minute. The filtration rate is 800 divided by the 120 square foot area, which is 6.7 gallons per minute per square foot, the kind of number you check against the permit limit.

A plant holds a 0.8 mg/L chlorine residual with 45 minutes of contact time, and the required CT is 22.5. Actual CT is 0.8 times 45, which is 36, and 36 divided by 22.5 is 1.6. Anything at or above 1.0 means the disinfection requirement is met.

Where operators lose points

Mixing MGD and gallons per minute, or square feet and cubic feet, sinks more filtration and loading problems than the concepts do. And on CT, people reach for the detention time when the rule wants the contact time.
