The short answer

The Class I to IV water treatment exam covers coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and the monitoring that proves it worked. On the Class I exam, treatment process is the heaviest area at about 31 percent, then equipment operation and maintenance at about 26 percent, laboratory at about 16 percent, source water characteristics at about 15 percent, and security, safety, and administration at about 12 percent. About one question in ten is a calculation. Topics stay the same through Class IV, but depth rises from routine math to judgment calls.

The exam behind the Class I to IV water treatment license

If you make raw water safe to drink, this is your exam: coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and the monitoring that proves it worked. It runs at four classes, Class I for the smallest and simplest plants up to Class IV for the largest, and most states give the standardized version. What the Class I exam weights

Water Professionals International, the body behind the standardized exams most states give, publishes the duty weights in its 2025 Need-to-Know Criteria. On the Class I water treatment exam the 100 scored questions split about like this:

  • treatment process, around 31 percent, the single heaviest area
  • equipment operation and maintenance, around 26 percent
  • laboratory, around 16 percent
  • source water characteristics, around 15 percent
  • security, safety, and administration, around 12 percent

About one question in ten is a calculation, and the Class I mix runs close to 40 percent recall and 60 percent application. Study to the weighting: process and equipment together are more than half the exam.

What changes from Class I to Class IV

The topics do not change as you climb. The depth does. At Class I a question asks you to run a process to its target and do the routine math. By Class IV the same subject comes back as a judgment call: hold a coagulant dose against a source that is turning over, read why a filter is breaking through early, decide what to adjust and prove it held. The published criteria describe the move as comprehension, then application, then analysis, and the weighting tilts toward process evaluation as the class rises.

One thing the exam does not decide is whether you can sit for a given class. That is eligibility, a mix of experience and education the state sets, and it usually means holding the class below first. Your state page carries those rules.

Where operators lose points

The plant has automated much of the daily math, so the calculations feel rusty in a testing center. And the exam asks the chemistry and the process the standardized way, not the way your plant happens to run. Those two gaps, the math and the general framing, are where capable operators slip.

Treatment process is the heaviest duty on the exam, around 31 percent, and it follows the water through the plant. These modules take it in the order the water moves, each one the way the exam asks it:

Class I leans on running each step to its target; by Class IV the same steps return as judgment calls. The recordkeeping that proves it all worked is in records and reporting.

One caution on editions

Three versions of the criteria are floating around: the current 2025 set, the 2018 reprints, and older 2007 copies still posted on some state sites. They differ. Study from one, and make it the edition your state gives now.
